Cast Member, Maria (Sonia Manzano) Leaves Sesame Street after 44 years



Sonia Manzano, who played Maria since her Sesame Street career began in 1971 is now retiring from the show after 44 years.

Maria was first a teenager who played a Puerto Rican teenager working at the neighborhood lending library. Later on the show, Maria owned the Fix-It shop, repairing a lot of toasters and other things with her husband Luis. She has shared 15 Emmys with the show as one of the writers and  became a permenant cast member after 3 years on the show, 

At 65-years-old, Manzano announced her retirement at the American Library Annual Conference. 

Now what’s next for Sesame Street? How will the Fix-It shop or the show play out without Maria?
