Sonia Manzano, who played Maria since her Sesame Street career began in 1971 is now retiring from the show after 44 years.
Maria was first a teenager who played a Puerto Rican teenager working at the neighborhood lending library. Later on the show, Maria owned the Fix-It shop, repairing a lot of toasters and other things with her husband Luis. She has shared 15 Emmys with the show as one of the writers and became a permenant cast member after 3 years on the show,
At 65-years-old, Manzano announced her retirement at the American Library Annual Conference.
